HONOURS RESEARCH PROJECT
CASA DEL ALMA

See below for more information.

CASA DEL ALMA

Creating a haven for Oaxacan artisans.

The rural Mexican community of Oaxaca currently faces ecological and economic challenges stemming from a lack of local control over its natural and cultural resources.

This research project explores how spatial design could preserve and enhance rural Mexican communities from the adverse effects of current ecological and economic challenges.

The overall spatial experience is one that respects the unique culture and traditions of Oaxaca by preserving critical regional elements whilst establishing an enhanced lifestyle for the artisans residing and working there.

PLEISURE

Earth's future could be bleak if humanity exhausts its resources. Climate change, environmental destruction and human health issues may one day bring about humanity's demise. But . . .

What if humans could work to generate sustainable energy for Earth's future through their leisure activities?

Welcome to PLEISURE - a place set in the near future where Earth's resources are diminishing, and conventional methods of work are undergoing radical change. At PLEISURE, humans can generate sustainable energy through leisure activities that can make a day of work enjoyable. Transforming the former Amazon Distribution Centre into a space of unconventional energy manufacturing, PLEISURE is work without the stressors faced by past generations.

AUDITOPIA

Auditopia - the idealistic prototype development for Earth’s last inhabitants. As humans transformed with technological overuse, Auditopia harnesses their enhanced hearing capabilities allowing them to “work” in their unconscious states and spend their conscious hours in leisure pursuits.

REVOLUTIONS

Like the Earth’s rotations around the sun, fashion trends emerge and disappear with daily repetition. Fashions cycle like the revolutions of the Earth on its axis.

REVOLVE

REvolve is a bold retail space designed to revolutionise the future of retail by promoting ethical and sustainable fashion choices without the negative connotations associated with secondhand opportunity shopping.

TRINITY

Trinity is a Co-housing project named for its location on the corner
of George St and Trinity Place in East Melbourne. ‘Trinity’ which
means a collection of three offers its residents 3 key features:
1) Urban gardening opportunities
2) Co-housing apartment living and
3) A Vibrant inner-city location
Within walking distance to the Fitzroy Gardens and MCG and a tram ride to Melbourne’s CBD, Trinity is perfectly situated to provide a modern living experience for those seeking a more social residential arrangement.

CHROMO COMMUNITY

CHROMO is a co-housing project with a difference. Purposely designed with communal spaces to promote positive healing to mind, body and soul while also providing modern and comfortable private retreat spaces. Given that we have an ageing population, there is likely to be greater need for buildings such as Chromo in the future. With increasingly limited access to land space, co-housing projects will also become more common, and hubs such as this could be designed in communities throughout Victoria.

THERMAE

Designing a pod within a workspace (Co-work Me, St Kilda), I have designed Thermae a hot bathroom for public bathing. This space has dim lighting creating a moody atmosphere and is shut off to the outer workspace creating a quiet, reflective and relaxing ambience. With the extensive use of stone, visitors are reminded of their dependence on earth’s organic elements, generating a sense of security and peace.

PIPELINE STUDIOS

Pipeline Studios is designed for the open-plan multi-business collaborative working spaces, known as Cowork me, located in St Kilda. As stated in the brief, we were to focus on creating meaningful spaces that promote social connection and a sense of wellbeing. Pipeline Studios offers a sense of community, identity and belonging. It encourages social connections and a sense of wellbeing through generating ideas and actively participating in various studio practices. It offers a space to host social events and encourages mental wellbeing through drawing, painting, colouring and other craft activities with friends.

EMERGE

EMERGE is a space of meditation, reflection and transformation from the external busyness of Melbourne’s hype CBD.  The idea of transformation comes from entering the space from the frenetic pace of the busy urban environment of the working week and entering a reflective meditative space. Within the structure, light is also transformed, creating an everchanging pattern as sunlight alters throughout the day, and after dusk, by external spotlights attached to the surrounding buildings. In addition to the concept of experimental lighting, the ceiling roof stencil is intended to mimic the light patterns that would form on the ground through the canopy of a rainforest, enhancing the feeling of serenity.

DESERT PROJECT

Desert Project is designed for the Simpson Desert in central Australia. It serves as a meditation and water therapy studio where its inhabitants are offered relief from the harsh climate. During the design process, I tested lighting techniques through a physical model made of cardboard and white foam board. I used a torch and cellophane in various colours to produce a diverse lighting effect that would really augment the interior. It's in this project, that I realise without lighting there would be no atmosphere or interior environment and the inner realm would be quite dull and mundane. The intricate shadow play that forms through the open slits in the façade strengthens the project concept.
